Goldsmith Melissa McClure grew up shuttling between Manhattan & Texas, and it was this rich opposition of places which created an appreciation for considering context. A fifth generation jeweler, her current line was inspired by her grandmother's family locket bracelet; recognizing the physical beauty of the ''tree'' of her family, she explores the links between human anatomy and the physical makeup of other living things.................................
''I believe that because the gold in my pieces is hand worked as opposed to cast or assembled, it holds a certain amount of energy from the hammer and the self doing the hammering. Jewelry is the most intimate and personal of items we wear. It sits directly on our skin; over our hearts, bracelets at a strong pulse point-- they are our talismans, emblems and projections.
Melissa graduated with a B.A. from Middlebury College in 1994 and received her AAS Magna Cum Laude from FIT in 2005. |
